Today one could select from a wide variety of excursions: morning walking tour of Linz, morning bike tour of Linz, all day bus tour to Salzburg, all day bus tour to Český Krumlov in the Czech Republic, afternoon bus tour to Salzburg, or afternoon bus tour thru the Salzkammergut, the lake country east of Salzburg. I opted to take a short bike ride along the Danube in Linz in the morning and the afternoon Salzkammergut tour. We had biked in the Salzkammergut twice before and was interested in seeing it again.
Along the waterfront in Linz.
The first lake on our Salzkammwergut tour was the largest one, Attersee. We had never been there and I saw why. It is very bike unfriendly; the road that circles the lake is narrow with no shoulder or bike lane, and has lots of traffic.

We next headed to Mondsee on Mondsee (lake), where we had spent the night in 2002.

We next drove around the south side of Wolfgangsee past St. Gilgen and Strobl, towns we had passed thru in 2002. Wolfgangsee can be seen from above St. Gilgen.
Somewhere between Mondsee and Sankt Wolfgang
Sankt Wolfgang across Wolfgangsee. We have been at this spot, but didn't get around the lake to Sankt Wolfgang. This time we did stop there.
Sankt Wolfgang street scene
On the waterfront of Sankt Wolfgang. The whole day alternated between sun and dark overcast and some short rain showers.

We next headed for Bad Ischl, a famous spa town and winter home of Emperor Franz Josef and Franz Lehar. We had spent the night here in 2002 and 2003. So I was disappointed when our route completely bypassed Bad Ischl thru a tunnel.
Countryside between Sankt Wolfgang and Bad Ischl
Traun River between Bad Ischl and Ebensee
Our last lake was Ebensee. We stopped at Traunkirchen for a short walk along the lake around the peninsula containing the Johannesbergkapelle (St. John's mountain chapel).
No mention was made of the famous fisherman pulpit in this nearby parish church that we had visited in 2003.
