GREAT ALLEGHENY PASSAGE AND C&O CANAL
2010 Confluence to Meyersdale
Today we would be on the Pennsylvania section of the Allegheny Highlands Trail. We opted to take the short cut back to the trail at the Harnedsville trailhead via Hogback Road. Going over the hill saved 3 miles, compared to backtracking over the flats through Confluence.

In the parking lot at Markleton. What in the world is a dressing stockade? Inside, it looked like a dressing room at a swimming pool or lake.
Two CSX helpers heading back to Connellsville. Several times I had noticed two engines heading in the opposite direction by themselves. I found out later that they were added to freight trains at Connellsville to help them make the grade to the continental divide. They would then be detached at Sand Patch and head back to Connellsville. In the old days, helpers were attached to the front of a train; but now they are added to the rear and radio controlled from the lead engine.
Rockwood

At Garret the trail turns into an extremely rough road for several blocks. You would think the town would at least try to run a steam roller over it.
Between Rockwood and Garrent the Casselman widens.

Meyersdale visitor center. Unfortunately we arrived a little after it closed for the evening and before it opened the next morning. Sign boards here had a comprehensive list of local services.
