GREAT ALLEGHENY PASSAGE AND C&O CANAL
2010 Connellsville to Confluence (Ursina )
Today we would be on the Yough River Trail - South section. It is the oldest section of the GAP; and it is showing its age. Numerous sharp rocks have made their way to the surface, meaning you have to be alert to avoid a rough ride.
The first high, curving bridge just outside of Connellsville.
Second high level bridge near Connellsville.
A downhill short cut from the Melody Motor Lodge to the trail passes under this bridge. Click
here for details.
The Yough in Ohiopyle State Park between Connellsville and Ohiopyle
In Ohiopyle State Park - one of our favorite rest spots
High bridge at Ohiopyle, after the Yough has dropped over the waterfall.
Visitor center at Ohiopyle, always a nice rest stop. The parking lot was almost full; and we passed many day tripping cyclists returning from Confluence.
Between here and the end of the YRT- South, the surface improved somewhat; fewer and smaller rocks poking through the surface.
Kayaker caught in shallow water just upstream from Ohiopyle.
One of the few "cuts", or "fills" for that matter, on the GAP. The vast majority of the time the trail ran on a ledge with a steep hill to the right and a steep drop off to the left (river) side.
The unused former Western Maryland RR bridge viewed from Confluence. The trail abandons the railroad grade and bridge as it passes by Confluence.
Riverest B&B on a peaceful street in Ursina, PA, 1.5 miles outside of Confluence was a very pleasant place to stay.
There was only one eating place in Ursina; and it featured, like most of the establishments in the towns along the trail, pizza, subs, and salads. The stromboli was excellent. Beware! It is only open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and none during the Winter.
